Professor Joana Simões Pereira, MD, PhD

Professor Joana Simões Pereira, MD, PhD, is a specialist in Endocrinology, with particular dedication to oncological endocrinology and thyroid disorders.

She graduated in Medicine from the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Coimbra (2004–2010) and subsequently completed her specialty training in Endocrinology at the Portuguese Institute of Oncology of Lisbon – Francisco Gentil (2012–2017). In parallel, she completed a PhD in Medicine at NOVA Medical School (2014–2021), with a doctoral thesis focused on aggressive thyroid cancer.

Throughout her career, she has also pursued international training, most notably the Clinical Scholars Research Training Programme at Harvard Medical School (2015), as well as successfully completing the European Board Examination in Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism in 2018.

Since 2018, she has worked as a Consultant Endocrinologist at the Portuguese Institute of Oncology of Lisbon – Francisco Gentil, where she coordinates the Endocrine Rehabilitation Clinic, dedicated to the management of endocrine complications associated with cancer.

Her clinical practice focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of thyroid tumours and other endocrine neoplasms, hormone dysfunctions related to oncological disease, disorders of the pituitary, adrenal and parathyroid glands, gonadal hormonal disturbances (with impact on oestrogen and testosterone production), menopause, and diabetes.
